Italia. Cronaca di un amore

Italia è un progetto composto da 15 immagini realizzate negli anni '90, quando Steinmetz (i cui genitori sono entrambi europei) soggiornò per alcuni periodi nel nostro paese. Quasi tutte le immagini sono scattate tra Roma, Venezia, Firenze. Il soggetto, però, non risulta mai essere il paesaggio, ma l'individuo e le sue relazioni.
Il titolo del progetto è un'evidente riferimento al cinema di Michelangelo Antonioni.
Nel lavoro dell'autore, persone e luoghi scaturiscono da una "flânerie" mai pianificata e il risultato è una sequenza poetica e narrativa caratterizzata anche dal magistrale utilizzo di un bianco e nero che tinge ogni scena di una patina all'apparenza impalpabile ma in realtà fortemente caratterizzante. Un'unica immagine a colori chiude la serie.
Erede di una grande tradizione fotografica, Steinmetz opera una fotografia aperta, che non ambisce a spiegare le cose ma in cui ogni immagine è come un frammento di un quadro di insieme.

Mark Steinmetz (1961) vive ad Athens, Georgia. Ha insegnato a Harvard, Yale e al Sarah Lawrence College, ed ha ricevuto il prestigioso Guggenheim Fellowship. Le sue opere sono presenti nelle collezioni più prestigiose, tra cui il MoMA di New York, il Metropolitan Museum of Art, il Whitney Museum of American Art e l'Art Institute of Chicago.
Ha pubblicato Quattro libri con l'editore Nazraeli Press: South Central (2006) - South East (2008) - Greater Atlanta (2009) e recentemente il volume in edizione limitata: 'Italia. Cronaca di un Amore'

Italia. Cronaca di un amore

Italia is a project comprising 15 pictures produced in the 1990s, when Steinmetz (whose parents are both European) made several visits to our country. Nearly all of the pictures were taken in Rome, Venice and Florence. The subject, however, is never the landscape but rather the people and the relationships between them.
The title is a homage to Michelangelo Antonioni's cinema. People and locations emerge in his works from a kind of "flâneur" that is never planned out and the result is a poetic and narrative sequence of images, characterised by a masterly use of black and white lending each scene an apparently intangible patina that is, in reality, a strongly identifying feature. One color photograph closes the series.
Heir to a great photographic tradition, Steinmetz has an open photographic style, in which each photograph is like a fragment of an overall picture.
The exhibition is curated by Giulia Zorzi and Flavio Franzoni for the cultural Association MiCamera
